James Marshall, known professionally as Dalek, is a painter renowned for his creation of the Space Monkey character. After completing art college in the 1990s, he began exhibiting his work, producing stickers and prints of the character to promote further development of his art. A pivotal moment in Dalek's career occurred in 2001, when he relocated to Brooklyn, New York. That same year, he attended a Takashi Murakami exhibition at the Boston Museum, where he was inspired by Murakami’s distinctive approach to art. Realizing that he required a more structured framework for his own artistic practice, Dalek pursued an apprenticeship with the acclaimed Japanese painter. This mentorship significantly shaped his studio practice, particularly his understanding of color mixing and other essential aspects of his current artistic process.  Dalek has since participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the United States, Asia, and Europe. He has also created several large-scale murals and completed a range of commercial commissions for notable companies, including Nike, Hurley, American Express, Microsoft, and Instagram. His work has been widely acclaimed by critics and featured in prestigious publications such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and Juxtapoz, among others.
